HDD utilizes a drill rig to install pipe with virtually no excavations being necessary. In accordance with design drawings, a drill rig is set up at the ground surface, pushing drill pipe into the ground and establishing the pathway for the product pipe to be installed. MDR Inc. couples the use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment with a vacuum extractor. The GPR equipment sends a signal into the ground and anomalies are registered on the computer screen. The anomalies can either be underground piping (live or abandoned) or other subsurface features including large boulders, metal, or other items. The GPR offers a way to identify locations that require further investigation using potholing equipment to create a small diameter hole until the utility is visibly located. This combination offers a way of visually locating the utility in a safe manner to determine the true and accurate location, including depth.
